Ukrainian citizens are able to stay anywhere within the EU for a period up to 90 days without any visa. The EU has implement the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD), to provide Ukrainians with immigration options throughout the EU. After arriving in an EU country, Ukrainian citizens will be able to apply for TPD status which will give them rights to travel freely, work and also give them access to social benefits such as housing and healthcare. The European Commission have developed this website to provide anyone fleeing the war with the latest information.
Germany remains strongly committed to supporting Ukraine. The German government has created the Germany4Ukraine portal to provide a wide range of information regarding entry procedures, accessing healthcare and much more.
Entry to Germany
Ukrainian nationals are allowed to travel to and stay in Germany without a visa for a period of 90 days. At the present time Germany has removed restrictions for people travelling without a biometric passport and will accept alternative documents (such as the Ukrainian ID Card).
If you do not have a place to stay, you should go to a reception centre where you will be issued a certificate of arrival. At the reception centre you can be provided with temporary housing, food and medical assistance.
Applying for Temporary Protection
If you would like to stay for longer than 90 days it is recommended that you apply for a temporary residence permit, which will also enable you to work in Germany. The application process typically happens in 3 steps:
- Register your arrival at the nearest reception centre.
- Register your address with the local registration authority.
- Apply for a residence permit at your local foreigners authority or online. Locations of the foreigners authority offices can be found using this map.
If you already have a residence permit for temporary protection that was valid as of 1st February 2024 it will be extended until 4th March 2026 automatically, you do not need to visit the foreigners authority to apply for the extension.

There are many options for free online courses for learning German, such as VHS-Lernportal, a list of recommended options can be found here.
In person language courses can also be organised through the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), as part of their integration courses.
Ukrainian nationals who have obtained a residence permit through temporary protection are eligible to receive statutory health insurance (GKV) for the duration of their recognised residence.
To access healthcare you should contact the social welfare office (Sozialamt) in your district to apply for a electronic health card (eGK).

Local employment agencies (Agentur für Arbeit) are able to provide you with assistance finding a job, they are also able to offer advice and vocational training.
A Ukrainian language helpline, +499111787915, has also been set up to offer help during the early stages of your job search.
Local employment agencies (Agentur für Arbeit) can assist you to apply for Citizen's Benefits and child support, the amount of support you can receive depends on the number of people in your family.
Recent changes to the rules regarding financial support being offered to Ukrainian nationals, states that people who are able to work must be actively looking for employment in order to receive financial support.
